I am so excited to announce that I will be a speaker at TedX Flour City, in Rochester, NY Saturday November 5th, 2016!!! I will be talking about building community by creating public art together. I have been a long time member of the Community Built Association, that advocates for the idea that building together builds community. Building what? Something PUBLIC that will bring joy to many! Something tangible, like a mosaic, or a mural, or a playground, or a park bench. Working together, working through challenges, fosters those connections that are the basis of community. I will be sharing my experience working in this vein, and will offer some practical models that you may adopt. I am so grateful to be able to share these ideas because I have found them so valuable, and I believe they offer real hope for the future.

I am so grateful to work with a wonderful team of artists on the 1st St. Mosaic project in Ithaca, NY! 2016 is our third year installing community made mosaic art on the wall of the Ithaca City Department of Public Works wall in the Sciencenter parking lot. And, yes, this year we wrapped around the corner! The mosaic can now be seen adorning the Franklin St. side of the DPW facility. Check out the progression of the project, including many more photos of the completed work on my public art page (under the Community Art tab), or just click here.

We finished grouting on September 11th. Using masonry stain, in our grout, added dramatically to the overall look of the work. I was pleased that our last day of work on the project was the 15 year anniversary of Sept. 11th, 2001, because creating art together is a powerfully positive statement of values, and a testament to the ability of communities to define themselves, and create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped bring this project to reality! And thank you to the Arts of the Southern Finger Lakes for funding it! And thank you for the many local donations of materials and food that propelled us forward!

Hi there mosaic fans, food security activists, artists, and community members. Here are the tiles you sculpted and glazed! They have been fired twice and are ready to be installed on the wall of the DPW facility on 1st St. in Ithaca, NY, as part of the 1st St. Mosaic Project, right across from the Sciencenter. Nice work!

I am excited to announce that I have received confirmation of my selection by the City of Ithaca to create a design for the location markers along the walk and the anchor sculpture to go in front of Southside Community Center.I am in the process of getting input from the community. Here’s a really nice interview I did with Maya Cueva, a reported with WICB’s Ithaca Now program, talking about the project and the importance of community engagement.
And on the 1st St. Project
I also received a confirmation from the Tompkins County Tourism Bureau for a Neighborhood Celebrations grant to hold tile making events in Ithaca’s Northside neighborhood in preparation for the 1st St. Mosaic Project. Mark your calendars for Saturdays April 12th and 26th for the 1st St. Mosaic Project’s tile making events. The project has also secured approval From the New York Foundation for the Arts as a tax deductable giving opportunity through Artspire.

I am working with a team of artists and we are planning a community built mosaic for a wall of the DPW waste water facility on 1st St. in Ithaca, NY. The site is right across the street from the Sciencecenter. We are using the method that Isaiah Zagar, of Philadelphia, uses. We have written a few grants and are planning to hold tile making workshops in the Northside neighborhood, work with 6th graders at Boynton Middle School, and have an installation event in August of 2014. We have a Facebook page set up so you can keep up on the latest info as we set dates for the workshops and let people know where, in the neighborhood, they will be held. We will also have a list of materials we are hoping to get donated and info about how and where to do that. Ithaca, and the Public Art Commission in particular, have really done a fantastic job of identifying walls and spaces for public art. I am really excited about this project because it will be one of the first opportunities for the community to be involved in the making of the art that will create the sense of place where they live.
